Where to stay in Mallorca: the best areas

Mallorca is the largest island of the archipelago, so it has many places on the coast where you can spend your holidays. If we were asked to make a choice… we would definitely choose the north and the southeast of the island, but it’s a matter of personal preferences. Any zone of the island is a good choice.

Car hire Mallorca

The location of your hotel booking will depend, above all, on the type of trip you are planning to take. If you rent a vehicle, you will have more flexibility in your choice of location. If not, it is advisable to know what options are available in each place in order to avoid making a mistake.

We want to make it easy for you, so pay attention to the list of locations we have prepared for you!

Palma de Mallorca

Palma de Mallorca is one of the best areas to stay in Mallorca if you are looking to sleep in a place that is well communicated with the rest of the island, that offers a wide range of cultural activities and a lively nightlife that is not typical touristy.

Although you will probably prefer to stay in a beach area, sleeping in the city has its advantages and we recommend it, especially if you are traveling to Mallorca in winter or for a few days.

The old part of the city is beautiful with many visits of great historical value for art lovers. You shouldn’t miss a visit to La Seu, its cathedral, with the largest rose window in the world, as well as a walk through the Jewish district, a visit to the Royal Palace of La Almudaina or La Lonja.

🆓 Do you have limited time to visit the capital of Mallorca? Then we recommend that you book one of the free tours in Palma de Mallorca to get to know the most important places in the historic centre. Remember to book in advance, as there is no charge and you may run out of tickets in high season.

The capital is also a great place to go shopping and enjoy some of the best nightlife on the island, with plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs in the Santa Catalina district. If you have rented a car, you can enjoy the beaches of the island during the day and the atmosphere of Palma at night.

In terms of accommodation , the best areas to stay in are the old town and the Paseo Marítimo, where you will find the most luxurious hotels as well as more affordable options.

Palmanova

Palmanova is a tourist village very close to Palma and Magaluf, but with a much quieter atmosphere.

It is a very good area to stay in, as it is well communicated and combines the tranquillity of its beautiful beaches (Son Maties, Es Carregador and Na Nadala) with the nightlife offered by its neighbour Magaluf.

In addition, it has many shops, bars and restaurants, ideal for those who want to go for a walk and extend their day at the beach.

Prices are a little more expensive than in Magaluf, but it is definitely worth getting away from the hustle and bustle when it comes to relaxation. If you are traveling with your family or you are looking to combine relaxation and leisure… Don’t hesitate! This is your area.

Santa Ponsa

Santa Ponsa is an ideal destination for families and couples looking for peace and tranquillity, as well as for golf lovers, as it has three golf clubs.

The town has a large beach, ideal to enjoy with children, as its waters are shallow and it has a pine forest where you can take shelter from the sun. It is very close to the Natural Park of Sa Dragonera, so the excursion to the island is one of the most recommended activities in the area, along with boat trips to see dolphins.

The port is located on the spot where Jaime I landed in the conquest of the island, so if you and your beloved ones want to enjoy the history and nature, as well as the port, you can take a trip to Puig de sa Morisca, an archaeological park with hiking routes suitable for all ages.

Santa Ponsa is a quiet and elegant destination. Its seafront boulevard, equipped with all kinds of services: souvenir shops, bars and restaurants, is a sign of it. If you are looking for nightlife, this is not your place.

Puerto de Sóller

Port de Sóller, or Puerto de Sóller, is one of the most highly rated places to stay in Mallorca. Its location, in a small bay sheltered by the Serra de Tramuntana, makes it an idyllic and perfect place to relax surrounded by a rural atmosphere.

It is ideal for travelers looking for cycling, hiking or other outdoor activities; it is also a must-see for all visitors coming to Mallorca.

Despite its small size, it is an area of great tourist activity due to the charm of the port itself, its stunning natural surroundings and its boulevard full of quality shops, cafés and restaurants.

If you are not concerned about the price, the hotel offer in Puerto de Sóller will fulfil your expectations.

Puerto de Pollensa

Port de Pollença or “Eu Moll“, as it is known by the locals, is one of the most charming places to stay in Mallorca and very popular with families with children, couples and sportsmen and women.

It is a fishing village at the northern end of the Serra de Tramuntana, surrounded by an impressive natural environment and with a huge beach that has turned it into a popular destination for people who want to go for a walk or practising water sports as paddle surfing or kitesurfing.

Moreover, it is a highly family-friendly area that attracts many British and German travelers, who are looking to enjoy the island in a healthy and nature-friendly way, and is currently one of the top destinations for cycling tourism in the Mediterranean. This, at Yo soy Mallorca… we love it!

In addition to its beach and port, there are many other attractions in the area, including the Cape of Formentor, the Mirador Es Colomer viewpoint and the town of Cala Sant Vicenç, with its crystal clear waters on beaches such as Cala Barques and caves of high archaeological value.

Both day and night, you’ll find a lively atmosphere due to the cafés and restaurants along the seafront promenade.

Puerto de Alcudia

🚐 Have you decided to stay in Alcudia? Book here, at the best price, the transfer from Palma Airport for you and your family.

One of our favourite areas to stay in Mallorca is Puerto de Alcudia. It is an ideal destination for a family holiday, as it has all the necessary services at a very affordable price compared to the south of the island.

Frequented by Spanish families, Alcudia is an ideal place to learn about the history of the island, through the Roman ruins of Pollentia and its old town surrounded by walls, and in Puerto de Alcudia you will find a wide range of hotels to stay in.

So if you are looking for a lot of activities, water sports, shopping and restaurants, without giving up a traditional Mallorcan and cultural atmosphere, the town of Alcudia and its port, located 1km from the town, will offer you all this and more.

Playa de Muro

Another of our favourite holiday spots is Playa de Muro, also in the north of the island, between Puerto de Alcudia and Can Picafort.

It has an incredible white sandy beach, ideal to enjoy with the youngest members of the family, as its crystalline waters are shallow and it has all the necessary facilities for tourists: hammocks and parasols for hire, lifeguard posts, beach bars and souvenir shops. We tell you all about this beach here.

Its first-rate hotel infrastructure and the wide range of offers available all year round make it a favourite destination for travelers and residents alike, even in the low season.

If you don’t feel like getting around, Playa de Muro will be your best choice, with one of the most beautiful beaches of the island and provided with all the necessary services.

Can Picafort

Slightly livelier, at the end of Playa de Muro, is the area of Can Picafort, where family tourism predominates, but also tourism for couples, young people and older adults.

The place offers fun for everyone and is probably the best value for money in the north of the island.

Its beach is its main attraction: beautiful, with fine sand and transparent waters; as well as the multiple possibilities you will have to entertain yourself, as you can practice many activities and adventure sports, just like in the rest of the Bay of Alcudia.

It is an interesting option to stay in Mallorca, but if we had to choose we would prefer Playa de Muro, as the beach is quieter and it is also very close to the nightlife of Puerto de Alcudia.

Cala Ratjada

Without a doubt, the northeast of the island is one of the best options to consider if you are looking for accommodation in Mallorca. We’ll tell you, halfheartedly, that it’s our favourite area (it’s impossible for us to choose just one place!).

Grupotel Aguait Resort & Spa
Grupotel Aguait Resort & Spa (Cala Ratjada)

Ideal for couples, Cala Ratjada is the perfect place for those looking for relaxation in the wildest Mallorca, but without giving up dining in a nice restaurant or having fun in one of its many nightclubs. The nightlife scene is quite good.

📝 Check here the complete guide with all the information about Cala Ratjada.

Its surroundings, with the typical Mediterranean nature and its white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, which you can admire at their best in the incredibles Cala Agulla, Cala Mesquida or Cala Moll, together with its many recreational opportunities, turn Cala Ratjada in one of the best base camps.

Cala Millor

In the south of Cala Ratjada you can find Cala Millor, a beach area where you will find peace and quiet, entertainment and quality accommodation at a good price.

It is one of the best places to stay in Mallorca, as it combines hustle and bustle with relaxation, and is therefore frequented by young people, families and seniors.

In addition to its spectacular beach, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, karaoke bars and pubs with live music along the seafront boulevard, so fun is guaranteed.

🎈 Do you want to live a unique experience? Enjoy the most romantic sunrise aboard a hot air balloon and be amazed by the views of the area. You choose when!

Cala d’Or

Cala d’Or s undoubtedly another of the most recommended places to stay in Mallorca. Perfect for everyone, it attracts families, couples, groups of young and older people, as well as athletes who find many options for cycling and water sports in the surrounding area.

This area has absolutely everything: good beaches and coves, boutiques, restaurants and nightlife. It offers the perfect balance one needs during a well-deserved holiday.

Being one of the most ancient tourist towns of the island, it preserves the typical charm of the fishing villages of the archipelago, making it one of the favourite areas for Mallorcans.

If you decide to visit this zone, you cannot miss a visit to the nearby and famous Drach Caves, one of the must-see places you should definitely visit on your trip to Mallorca.

Colònia de Sant Jordi

At the south-eastern tip of the island lies Colònia de Sant Jordi, one of the best places to stay in Mallorca, and for no other reason than because it is surrounded by many of the best beaches in the Mediterranean.

Its privileged location turns the area into one of the best places to stay if you are a nature lover, as you can go hiking, cycle touring, fishing or practice water sports.

You will find yourself close to incredible beaches such as Es Carbó, Ses Roquetes or the famous Es Trenc, considered one of the best beaches in Mallorca, which you can access on foot or from the sea by renting a boat to enjoy them in a more exclusive way.

Boat hire in Mallorca

Furthermore, Colònia is located opposite the Cabrera Archipelago Maritime-Land National Park, so if you want to spend a day on the islet, you can book a visit starting from there.

Its hotel offer is not very extensive, although you will find all-inclusive resorts, agrotourism or apartments, so prices may be slightly higher than in other areas of the island, but considering its location, we believe that the prices are fair.

El Arenal and the Bay of Palma

The areas of El Arenal and Playa de Palma are the favourites of the younger German tourists, due to their cheap prices and party atmosphere.

Although it is by far not one of our favourite areas to stay in, we have to admit that it is a very good option for a cheap night’s sleep in Mallorca, with a beach that is not bad at all and a general party atmosphere.

It is very close to the airport and the capital, Palma, so you can get there by public transport and not have to worry about driving.

Moreover, as it is been one of the most popular tourist destinations for decades, it offers a huge variety of restaurants, bars, shops and nightclubs, as well as a wide range of water sports.
