Andratx

Andratx is a municipality with only 7.600 inhabitants. It is a mountain village with a wealth of natural landscapes. Located just 4 km from the sea in the southwest part of the island of Mallorca, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

It is the cultural and administrative centre of the area and an essential place for those who want to get to know and explore the Sierra de Tramunatana.

On the coast of Andratx you will find small coves and beaches of fine sand as well as rocky beaches. The coastal tourist resorts of Port d’Andratx and Camp de Mar stand out. The mountain area offers everything from breathtaking scenery to rugged and spectacular coastlines. Several villages stand out, such as S’Arracó and Es Capdellà, which still conserve their rural and traditional charm.

Andratx is an ideal place if you are looking for the tranquillity and beauty of Mallorca.

There are several ways to get to Andratx, but the one we recommend, given the location and orography of this area, is to arrive in your own vehicle or a hire car. Although there are convenient public transport connections, this area is quite far from major sites, and therefore the pace of transport can be slower than usual.

Car hire Mallorca

If you have your hotel in Palma de Mallorca and you want to drive to Andratx, you should know that the distance that separates you is almost 30km. To get there you have to take the Ma-1 motorway and at Camp de Mar ou will have to turn right and take the Ma-1 regional road.

You will start alternating between national and regional roads until you reach Andratx: the Sierra de Tramuntana begins to come into view.

Getting to Andratx by public transport

To get to Andratx by bus you must take line 122 at the Intermodal Station in Palma, in Parque de las Estaciones, and at Santa Ponsa you must change to line 122, which will finally take you to your destination.

Cycling to Andratx from Palma de Mallorca is a real pleasure. You will enjoy tremendous views along the route, as you will be skirting the southern coastline, alternating sea views with inland areas and at times demanding uphill and downhill stretches. It will be an exciting 4-hour ride to Andratx and back to Palma.

If your idea is to reach Andratx by bike from the villages of the Sierra de Tramuntana such as Valldemossa, Sóller or Deià, you should know that you are about to start a challenge, as you will alternate ascents and descents, a real “leg-breaker”, although the beautiful landscapes you will enjoy while cycling make up for it.

If you are fit enough, I recommend cycling to Andratx from Valldemossa. It will be a nice experience that you will take away with you.

What to see and what to do in Andratx and its surroundings

The town of Andratx is the main urban centre of the municipality. Strategically located 5 km from the sea, its inhabitants sought protection from pirate attacks, which were frequent during a certain period in Mallorca’s history. This led to the construction of up to 10 watchtowers along the coast of Andratx.

Andratx is a village with a special charm, where you cannot miss its narrow cobbled streets, with its stone houses, such as those in the Pantaleu neighbourhood, where the Mills of Sa Plantea are located.

The Church of Santa María in Andratx, fortified in the 17th century and erected as a parish church since 1248, is a place of great cultural wealth where the Quadre des Moros painting stands out, which represents the Turkish landing on the 2nd of August 1548, among other works.

You should also visit the Castle of Son Mas, which has been the seat of the Town Hall since 1998, the Curia building, the Tower of So Na Gaia and the mills of Sa Gaieta.

Not to be missed, 3 kilometres outside Andratx, is the Contemporary Art Centre in Sa Coma-Andratx (CCA). It is a 4000 m² building perfectly integrated into the natural environment. You will be able to enjoy contemporary art, workshops and exhibitions.

Wednesday is one of the best days to visit Andratx, as the town market is held on this day. On this day the streets come alive and fill with stalls where you can buy Mallorcan products and enjoy a pleasant stroll.

Andratx is a quiet and picturesque place, ideal for relaxing and enjoying its peaceful atmosphere, especially if you come in summer, far from the hustle and bustle of nearby places such as Santa Ponsa and Palmanova.

Port d’Andratx

Port d’Andratx is one of the most beautiful and spectacular natural, sports and fishing harbours on the island, with around 500 moorings for yachts and luxury boats moored along its marina.

Port d’Andratx has a population of 3.300 inhabitants and has become one of the most important and exclusive tourist places in Mallorca.

There are impressive coves around Andratx such as Cala Llamp, Cala Moragues and Cala Egos.

Port d’Andratx is a cosmopolitan and lively place, where it is easy to meet people from all over the world, with shopping streets where you can buy clothes and handicrafts. It has a very interesting offer of restaurants and bars overlooking the sea, as well as a lively nightlife. One of the restaurants we recommend to eat a good arròs de notari right on the water’s edge is Ca’n Pep. Amazing!

Fancy sailing a boat in the Port d’Andratx area?
⛵ This area is spectacular for it! We recommend that if you have the opportunity to rent a boat with or without a captain, whether it is the typical Mallorcan llauts, sailing boats, motorboats, or even a catamaran, you should do so and enjoy sailing the waters of the southwest. If you are experienced, you can even rent a boat without a licence and cruise the coast at your leisure.

S’Arracó

S’Arracó is a hospitable and pleasant place of only 1,000 inhabitants, and includes a significant number of artists who chose to stay in this small village as inspiration for their work. The meeting point for the local residents are the only 3 bars that exist here: Can Nou, Can Viguet and Can Prima.

The urban nucleus began to be cemented from some possessions, such as the 18th century San Joan and, of course, around the Chapel of Santo Cristo, built by Antoni Ferrandell Verí, considered the founder of the village.

In S’Arracó you can still see low traditional houses with a garden or orchard at the back. You can also find modernist style houses, built with the money that emigrants living in France sent to their families, as was also the case in the town of Sóller. Most of them are on the main street called, obviously, Carrer França.

S’Arracó has an unbeatable location; it is in the middle of nature and is the departure point for many excursions, one of the most popular being the ascent to the Monastery of La Trapa.

S’Arracó is a beautiful and captivating village, so we would understand if you ended up succumbing to its mermaid songs and looking for a hotel in S’Arracó to spend the night.

Camp de Mar

Camp de Mar is a small tourist village with a beautiful beach of fine sand and crystalline waters, surrounded by mountains and a small island, which can be reached by a famous wooden bridge. The famous Illeta Camp de Mar Restaurant is located on this small island.

If you are looking for an activity or something to do in Camp de Mar, apart from having a quiet and relaxing time, you can visit the Tower of Cap Andritxol, a watchtower used in the past to keep pirates and corsairs at bay. Another activity in the surroundings of Camp de Mar that you can do is to play golf on the 18-hole golf course in Andratx.

Camp de Mar has a wide range of accommodation, so if you liked the area, you could rethink your initial accommodation plan and stay in a hotel in Camp de Mar.

Sant Elm

Sant Elm is an old fishing village that has been transformed, especially in summer, into a very touristy but quiet and relaxed place.

In the past it was known as La Palomera, and it was where the troops of Jaume I anchored before disembarking in Santa Ponça in 1229.

The beach of Sant Elm, also known as San Telmo, is a beach with crystal clear turquoise waters, like most beaches and coves in Mallorca. While you enjoy a day at the beach, you will have the island of Pantaleu just in front of you, Mitjana, on the right, and finally, the islet of La Dragonera.

We recommend the Restaurant Es Molí Sant Elm where you can savour appetising starters, ceviches, pasta, fish and meats, while enjoying views of the sea.

On the beach you will be able to relax and unwind with the beach umbrella and sun lounger service, and if you are looking for activity, you can try different water activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, sailing or simply swimming.

At the end of the day you will find yourself in one of the best places on the island to contemplate one of the most beautiful sunsets in Mallorca. You will be able to watch the sun “hide” behind the island of La Dragonera or in the sea, depending on the time of year you visit Sant Elm, while you have a cocktail in the restaurant Es Raor. Quite a show!

The opening of almost all bars, restaurants and services are subject to seasonality, so if you don’t go in summer and want to go, check their status beforehand.

Cala de Egos

This beach is a hidden pearl in the eastern part of Mallorca. As it is a cove that is difficult to access, it is not very crowded in summer. From the Sailing Club of Port d’Andratx, where you will have to leave your car, it is a 42′ walk to the beach. If you have a nice day, you’ll be in for a nice surprise when you get to the beach. It must have been well worth the walk.

Do you want to see Cala d’Egos and part of the coast of Andratx from another perspective on a 3-hour kayak route? Enjoy group sports activities in Mallorca. When you arrive at Cala de Egos you will stop for 15-20 minutes to enjoy this marvellous place.

Sa Dragonera Natural Park

In the area of Sant Elm you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views, especially towards the islet of La Dragonera with the walking route to La Trapa.

The Parc de Sa Dragonera was declared a protected area in 1995, finally, after much litigation by ecologists who fought to prevent the creation of a marina. It is an area of great environmental value, and it would have been a great loss if this initiative had not come to fruition.

Panoramic view of Sa Dragonera from La Trapa in Andratx, Mallorca

It has a surface area of 400 hectares and is 1 km long and is one of the most special areas for hiking in Mallorca, as it has a great variety of flora and fauna endemic to the area and different from the rest of the Sierra de Tramuntana.

The opening hours of the Natural Park of Sa Dragonera are from 10am to 5pm from 1st April to 30th September and from 10am to 3pm the rest of the year. You will have to get a permit for groups of 10 or more people and in the park you will find different routes of 30′, 1h 30′ and 2h 30′:

  • Itinerary of Na Miranda. Circular route and the shortest of all of 1.2 kms that can be done in only 30′.
  • Route to the Tramuntana Lighthouse. This 1.7 km route, also short, will take you no more than 60′ to complete.
  • Route from Far Vell to the summit of Na Propia. This lighthouse is the highest point on the island of La Dragonera, 352 metres high. It is 3.8 km away from the pier, and will take you about 3 hours round trip.
  • Itinerary to the Lighthouse des Llebeig. This is the longest route you can do on the island of La Dragonera. You will walk it from end to end and it will take you more than 3 hours round trip.

To get to Sa Dragonera, you will be able to do so in your own boat, with a charter boat (remember that you will have to apply for a permit), by one of the ferries that are available in summer, or with this excursion that we propose, designed for groups of 9 people and available from May and throughout the summer:
