Colònia de Sant Jordi

Colònia de Sant Jordi is one of the most important tourist towns on the south coast of Mallorca, as it is located next to what are probably some of the best beaches on the island and just in front of the island of Cabrera.

La Colònia, as it is affectionately known by Mallorcans, is one of the towns that make up the municipality of Ses Salines and its largest tourist centre, and is located between the municipalities of Santanyí and Campos.

What to see and do in Colònia Sant Jordi

The fishing village of Colònia de Sant Jordi is surrounded by spectacular nature and is one of the few areas that, despite its focus on tourism, has managed to preserve its authenticity and Mallorcan character.

It is an ideal destination for families with children and for travellers looking to relax, eat well and be close to beautiful beaches, or to practice outdoor sports.

The port of Colònia de Sant Jordi and the town centre

The most touristy and lively part of Colònia is its promenade, which starts at Platja d’es Port and ends at the marina, where numerous boats are moored and ferries depart for Cabrera.

On the promenade you will find most of the terraces, restaurants and shops, as well as a children’s playground, perfect if you are traveling with the little ones.

In the centre, although it is not one of the best known, S’Estany (located next to the salt works), a fortified building from the 15th century, the watchtower of s’Avall (14th century) and the tower of Ca’n Barbarà, next to the parish church, which are monuments of military architecture, stand out.

We recommend you visit the market in Colònia de Sant Jordi, which is held on Wednesdays on Avenida de la Primavera and where you will find local gastronomy, clothes and footwear, and handmade household items.

Beaches in Colònia de Sant Jordi

The beaches of Colònia de Sant Jordi are, without a doubt, the main attraction of the area. These are marvellous, with clear waters and fine white sand, especially those that are far from the city centre.

⚠️ The spectacular beach of Es Trenc does not belong to the municipality of Ses Salines, but to the municipality of Campos.
Even so, it is relatively close (about 8km), so if you like walking… you can take a hiking route along the coast until you reach paradise 🩵.

The beaches in Colònia de Sant Jordi (in the municipality of Ses Salines) are:

  • In the East: Es Port, Platja des Dolç, Platja de Can Curt, Platja d’es Dofí and Platja d’es Carbó.
  • In the West Cala Galiota, Platja d’es Cotó, Platja Estanys o Es Marqués and Platja Es Peregons.

Platja Es Carbó

The waters in this area are shallow and crystal clear, especially at Platja Es Carbó, our favourite beach in Colònia, which we recommend you to visit if you are in the area. It’s impressive!

Boat hire in Mallorca

A very good plan, as well as relaxing on one of the beaches, is to take a trip on board a charter boat and have the option of seeing them all from the sea and ending the day watching the sunset at the lighthouse of Ses Salines.

⚠️ Bear in mind that this area is home to a multitude of posidonia meadows, the plant responsible for the island’s wonderful waters, so if you decide to enjoy a day on board a boat… be responsible!

Isla de Cabrera

La Colònia is located in front of the island of Cabrera and the rest of the islets that make up the National Maritime-Land Park of the archipelago of Cabrera and from its port boats leave daily to visit the famous archipelago.

Island of Cabrera, in front of Colònia de Sant Jordi

The island of Cabrera is an idyllic place that offers nature in its purest state and the sensation of being far from any kind of civilisation, in a practically virgin land.

In our opinion, one of the best excursions you can do while traveling in Mallorca is to spend a day on the island of Cabrera to learn about its history, relax on its beaches and take a dip in the famous Blue Cave.

Centro de interpretación de Cabrera

Few travelers know about the Centro de Interpretación de Cabrera (Cabrera Interpretation Centre), an observation and dissemination centre that aims to offer a broad view of the biodiversity of the Cabrera National Park and to raise awareness of the different natural, historical and cultural values of the archipelago.

The centre is open every day from February to November and houses an aquarium with native marine species, a botanical garden and other exhibitions.

Opening hours:
High season:
• Monday to Sunday: 10am – 7pm
Low season:
• Monday to Sunday: 10am – 6pm

Salinas de s’Avall

At the end of the Avenida de la Primavera, before reaching the Platja dels Estanys, are the Salinas de s’Avall, the second oldest salt mines in the world in operation (4th century BC), which have been exploited by Punic, Roman, Byzantine, Arab and Christian merchants throughout the history of Mallorca..

Today, the famous fleur de sel is still extracted by hand and dried naturally.

Lighthouse of Ses Salines

Close to the town (although you will have to go by car) is the lighthouse of Ses Salines, one of the lighthouses of Mallorca and one of our three favourites 🩵.

If you have read other articles or if you follow us on the networks, you will have already realised that we love these magical and mysterious watchers of the sea, and that we always include their visit during our trips. What do they have?

This one, in particular, has a very special location, as it is the most southerly lighthouse and lies in front of Cabrera, as well as being the starting point for several hiking trails along the sea to some of the island’s most impressive beaches.

Restaurants in Colònia de Sant Jordi

Colònia de Sant Jordi and its surroundings have a good gastronomic offer, both international and Mallorcan cuisine, with many bars, cafés and restaurants. Also, on Thursday evenings there is a tapas route.

Our recommendations for eating in Colònia de Sant Jordi are:

  • Restaurante Salicornia: this restaurant is our favourite in Colònia de Sant Jordi, as it is an excellent option where you can enjoy traditional seafood cuisine, with local Mallorcan products and creative flavours. If you dare to try it, don’t forget to order the rock rock mussels with sobrasada sausage emulsion and the Mallorcan flatbread with trempó salad and seared fish of the day. Delicious!
  • 5illes Port: 5illes has three restaurants in Colònia de Sant Jordi, although we recommend the one on the seafront promenade for dinner, which is the one we like best. As in most shops near the beach, prices are not cheap, although in this case they are acceptable. Its speciality is Mediterranean-Asian fusion cuisine with Latin influences, so fashionable these days, and with portions that are ideal for sharing.
  • Pizzería Vesuvio: a highly recommended option if you are looking for a cheaper option. Pizzeria Vesuvio is one of the best known and most appreciated in the area, thanks to its pizzas with thin dough and quality ingredients made in a wood-fired oven. It could be part of the list of the 10 best pizza restaurants in Mallorca, no doubt.
  • Bodega Barahona – Casa Manolo: this restaurant is located in Ses Salines, very close to Colònia. Founded in the 1940s, it is a classic in the area where you can taste fresh fish and seafood. Among its specialities are the calamar de potera a la bruta (squid in its own ink), which is delicious; salt fish, lobster stew and rice dishes. None of the options will let you down, although you will of course pay for the quality.
