The beach of S’Estany d’en Mas, known as Cala Romántica, is one of the best coves in the east of Mallorca and an idyllic place to enjoy a holiday in a natural setting.
Located in the municipality of Manacor and very close to the tourist town of Porto Cristo, it is called Cala Romántica as a result of the urban development of its surroundings, specifically because of the hotel of the same name.
Despite the buildings, the area has a very natural and wild appearance, as most of the buildings are low and the beach is located in a bay surrounded by cliffs where pine trees and Mediterranean scrub grow.

Its sand is fine and white and its waters are intense turquoise and generally calm -although sometimes there is an E-SE wind-, as well as being an accessible beach and having a multitude of services that make Cala Romántica an ideal spot to enjoy with the whole family.

If you finally come by car:
- From Palma you will have to reach Manacor via the Ma-15.
- From the north of Mallorca, from towns such as Pollença, Alcudia or Playa de Muro, follow the Ma-12 towards Manacor.
Once in Manacor, take the road towards Cales de Mallorca (Ma-4015) until it ends and you reach the crossroads, where you will have to turn left towards Porto Cristo. Once you have joined the Ma-4014, after approximately 1 km take the exit to the right in the direction of Cala Romántica.
In case you are coming from any of the towns in Mallorca located in the southeast, you should take the Porto Cristo road and continue, once you have joined the Ma-4014, for about 10km until you reach the signs to Cala Romántica on the right.
Parking in Cala Romántica
You can park your vehicle along the streets of the urbanisation that gives access to Cala Romántica or in the free car park on the beach, which has a capacity for about 35 vehicles and has several parking spaces reserved for people with functional diversity.
Getting to Cala Romántica by public transport
Getting to Cala Romántica by public transport is feasible, although you should bear in mind that the connections on the island require several transfers, so getting to the best beaches and coves is usually very time-consuming.

Getting to Cala Romántica by boat
It is becoming increasingly common to see boats dropping anchor and spending the day in front of the beaches and coves of Mallorca.
The area of Cala Romantica is good for anchoring, as the depth is about 6 metres at 200 metres from the shore, as well as having a small jetty to the left of the cove (or right, when viewed from the sea), so renting a boat to reach it can be a spectacular plan.
However, it is important to be aware that there are occasional easterly winds and that the beach can be crowded with boats during the summer, so if you are not an experienced captain we do not recommend that you hire a boat without a licence.
The nearest port facility is in Porto Cristo, 2.3 nautical miles away, so if your idea is to rent a sailing boat in Mallorca or another type of motor boat to sail around the coves of the east, we recommend that you depart from there.

Facilities in Cala Romantica
The bay of Cala Romántica has a sandy beach about 100 metres long and 160 metres wide that slopes gently into the sea, ideal for families visiting with children.
The beach has a sun lounger and parasol rental service, although you should bear in mind that if you don’t arrive early you may find it difficult to get one, as in high season it is a very busy beach. However, don’t worry as there is plenty of space to place your own parasol and towel, which we recommend as there are few shady areas.
There are litter bins, showers, changing rooms and toilets, as well as places to eat or have a snack and even a supermarket nearby.
It also has an access walkway for people with reduced mobility from the car park and during the summer months the beach has a lifeguard service .
⚠️ Please note that although the waters are generally calm, the wind occasionally builds up higher waves, so if you’re traveling with kids… always keep an eye out!

What to do in Cala Romántica
In addition to swimming and relaxing on the fine sand of the beach, you can enjoy many activities in and around Cala Romántica.
On the beach itself you can rent a pedal boat and take a leisurely stroll in its waters, although due to its limited space you won’t find other options for renting water sports and activity equipment.
Enjoy the crystal-clear waters of S’Estany d’en Mas
The crystal clear waters of the east of Mallorca are perfect for snorkelling, so take your snorkelling equipment with you and enjoy the beach of Cala Romántica to the full. Please note, however, that due to the swimmers you will not find a lot of marine fauna near the sandy area, so we recommend that you move towards the cliff area.
Kayaking is another sport that will make you vibrate and have a great time as the waters of this part of Mallorca are excellent for their calm waters.
Catamaran trip along the east coast of Mallorca
If you want to discover hidden coves and cliffs in the eastern part of the island, but you don’t have your own boat or you don’t feel like going on a hiking route, from Cala Romántica you can hire this catamaran trip that passes through enclaves that are practically inaccessible by land.
During the route you will also make a stop to jump into the sea from the boat and cool off in areas dominated by Posidonia oceánica meadows. Don’t forget your mask and tube!
Hiking route to Cala Varques
If you want to enjoy the incredible beach of Cala Varques, one of the best beaches and best places to see in Mallorca, you should know that S’Estany d’en Mas is the legal starting point to access it, passing by incredible places such as Cala Falcó or the famous “Es Pontet” (a natural stone bridge) until you reach Cala Varques.

This 3.5km hike is easy as the path is completely flat, but don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes as the terrain is somewhat uneven and uncomfortable.
Cliff jumping and psicobloc
Although it is very common to find people practising “cliff jumping” and “psicobloc”, you should know that both activities are currently prohibited in the municipality of Manacor, due to their danger and the many accidents involving inexperienced tourists that have occurred on the nearby beach of Cala Varques.
Cliff jumping consists of jumping into the water from the cliffs and psicobloc is a type of climbing without a rope, using only your hands.
⚠️ Don’t take a gamble and enjoy all the alternatives offered by an environment such as these beaches!
Marine speleology in the east of Mallorca
In the vicinity of Cala Romántica and the other beaches of the east coast of Mallorca there is a large number of karstic caves that are perfect for caving. Some of the best known are the Cueva del Xot and the Cueva del Pont, which can be accessed by land, and the Cueva del Pirata, which is currently closed because it has been declared a special conservation area.
🔝 For the more adventurous, here you can book a route to the Cova des Coloms, one of the few caves accessible by swimming through the sea, perfect for discovering marine speleology and which is advisable to do with an expert guide.

Activities in the surroundings of Cala Romantica
S’Estany d’en Mas is a true natural paradise, despite the buildings, and that is why apart from swimming, diving or exploring its surroundings, you will find very few things to do.
However, this beach is very close to Manacor, the second largest city in Mallorca, and Porto Cristo, a coastal town ideal for eating out or going for a stroll with the family.
🎾 In Manacor, it is very interesting to visit the Rafa Nadal Museum Experience, a museum that reviews the career of the Mallorcan tennis player, who, as you know, is one of the best sportsmen in history.
And in Porto Cristo you will find the famous Caves of Drach, one of the essential visits to do if you are in Mallorca, which you can enjoy on this excursion to the Caves of Drach and the visit to the Majórica pearl factory.
Are you the kind of person who wants to add a bit of adventure and excitement to your holiday? Then we propose you another great plan: a buggy tour through the coves of the east of Mallorca from Porto Cristo or another town of your choice. Are you up for it?
Hotels in Cala Romántica
In the same area of the beach is the Hotel Cala Románticawhich gave it its current name, as well as many apartments and holiday rentals, which are an ideal option for accommodation on the island, especially in areas such as Cala Romántica, which has many services and is well communicated.
Nearby, there are also the urbanisations of Cala Anguila and Cala Mendia, with accommodation options; and only 7km away is the tourist centre of Porto Cristo, with a wider range of accommodation and services, which can be a great option for settling down and visiting nearby beaches and attractions.
But if you were to ask us, we would definitely choose to stay in the area of Cala Millor which, although 20 minutes away by car, is one of our favourite places to stay in Mallorca and would also allow you to visit S’Estany d’en Mas and other wonderful beaches in the area.
